Sports Club Websites Without the Upfront Bill
Most agencies bill £1,500 to £5,000 upfront for a club website, then charge again every time the committee wants a change. A subscription website turns that into one predictable monthly cost. The build, hosting, fixture updates, news posts, AGM minutes and small changes are all part of the same fee.
Traditional Agency Club Build
- £1,500 - £5,000 upfront from club funds
- Hourly fees every time fixtures or results change
- Hosting and domain billed separately
- Out of date within a season or two
- Hard to reach when the committee needs help
Nene IT Sports Club Subscription
- Nothing upfront
- Fixture, news and result updates included
- Hosting included in the fee
- Kept up to date as part of the service
- One person, easy to reach, replies the same day

Sports Club Website Subscription: How It Works
It works the same way your phone contract works. The club pays a fixed amount each month and the committee doesn't think about the underlying costs. There's no £1,295 invoice waiting to be paid out of subs before the site goes live. The build, the hosting, security patching, fixture updates, news posts, AGM minutes and someone to email when something breaks all sit inside one direct debit. After 36 months a typical club has spent around £1,080 on Basic or £1,800 on Premium - so the maths only stops favouring monthly somewhere past year five, and most clubs need a refresh before then anyway.
What the Club Pays For Each Month
Three things. First, the cost of designing and rebuilding the site itself, spread across the time the club uses it instead of all up-front. Second, the labour of small changes - fixture updates, news posts, photo galleries, AGM minutes, member alerts - which a freelancer would charge between £40 and £80 an hour for. Third, the boring stuff most committees forget: SSL renewals, framework updates, broken plugins, image compression, sitemap pings. The 6 to 12 small change requests a typical club sends in a year already cover the bulk of the fee.
When Upfront Beats Sports Club Subscription
If the club has £1,500 sat in reserves, no fixtures, no membership renewals, no events to publicise, no committee turnover, and genuinely never wants to email anyone about a typo - paying upfront is fine. The break-even point lands somewhere between year four and year six depending on how much support the club actually uses. Most clubs don't sit still that long. Fixtures change every season, new committee members want new sections, the regatta moves to a different weekend, a junior section gets added. Subscription handles all of that without a separate invoice each time.
Sports Club Subscription vs SportMember and Wild Apricot
Because those are SaaS platforms, not bespoke club websites. SportMember at around £20-£30 a month gets you the platform, a template, and per-member fees that scale up as your club grows. You're still doing the design, writing the copy, picking the photos, sorting the SEO, and fitting your club around the platform's idea of how clubs should run. £30 a month with me gets a properly designed club site, built by someone who's been writing websites professionally for nearly twenty years, with no per-member surcharge regardless of whether the club has 40 or 400 members.
What the £30 Sports Club Fee Excludes
Two things. Hosting from £15 a month is on top, because the right hosting level depends on how busy the site gets - a 50-member chess club has very different needs from a 400-member rowing club running online race entries. The other excluded item is anything classed as a "bigger change," meaning over roughly an hour of work. Think a new online entry system, an integration with a national governing body's data feed, or a complete redesign for a club rebrand. Those get a fixed quote up front, before any work begins, so there's no surprise invoice at the end.
Sports Clubs Best Suited to Subscription
Sports clubs of any size that don't want a £2,000 hit to reserves. Rowing clubs, sailing clubs, cricket clubs, rugby clubs, tennis clubs, golf and bowls clubs, hockey, netball, athletics, football, cycling. And other member organisations: scouts and guides, rotary clubs, women's institutes, choirs, music societies, history and heritage societies, allotment associations, small charities. Any group with regular fixtures, events, members or news to share is a fit. The model is less suited to clubs with strict procurement processes that require capital expenditure routing, or committees who genuinely want to own a website outright as an asset.
Common Sports Club Worries Answered
The two big ones committees ask about: "what if you go bust?" and "what if you put the price up?" If the business folds, your domain stays registered to the club, your content stays yours, and an exit script hands over the underlying files. Prices haven't moved since launch and the plan is to keep them flat by being efficient on the build side. If they ever did rise, the club would get 90 days notice and the option to either move on or take the site as-is at the old rate.
Sports Club Subscription Break-Even Maths
Subscription only costs more from year six onwards, and only if the committee literally never asks for a single change. Real-world maths: a 100-member club that posts 12 news items a year, updates fixtures across two seasons, and adds the odd regatta gallery pays around £540 a year on Basic plus hosting, where an agency build-plus-changes lands at £1,800 to £2,400 in year one and another £400 to £600 every year after. The cumulative gap closes around year seven if nothing breaks. Most club sites need a refresh by year five anyway because the committee, the kit, the sponsors and the league all moved on.

Sports Club Website Subscription FAQs
- What happens if the club cancels?
- You give 30 days notice and the site comes down at the end of the period. There is no exit fee. If the club wants to take the site with them we can talk about a buy-out figure based on what's been built.
- How long does the build take?
- Most Basic club sites are live within two to three weeks. Premium sites with member portals and online entries take a bit longer, usually four to six weeks, depending on how much content the committee can pull together.
- What does the £30 a month actually cover?
- Design, build, ongoing maintenance, security updates, fixture and news updates, and small content changes. Hosting is on top from £15 a month so you can choose the right level for your traffic and member volume.
- Does the club own its domain name?
- Yes. The domain is registered in the club's name and stays that way. If the club ever leaves, the domain goes with it.
- Can committee members make changes themselves?
- You can if you want to, but most committees just email and the change is done within a day. That's what the monthly fee covers. Saves a new chair or membership secretary learning a content system on top of everything else.
- How is this different from SportMember, Wild Apricot or ClubSpark?
- Those are SaaS platforms - one product across thousands of clubs, with per-member fees that climb as the club grows. Nene IT builds a proper website around your club specifically, on a flat monthly fee, with no extra cost when membership grows.
- Do you work with clubs outside the Nene Valley?
- Yes. Based in Oundle, but most club work is done remotely over email and the occasional Zoom. Local clubs across Peterborough, Stamford, Thrapston, Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough get visits when useful.
- Can we move the site to another developer if we want?
- Yes. There's an exit script that hands over the underlying files, the database export, and the domain transfer. The design and content are yours - I don't claim ownership of either. Most agencies build on closed platforms that lock you in. This doesn't.
- Do you write the content for us?
- I'll happily draft the homepage and any committee pages from a 30 minute chat with the chair or membership secretary. Most clubs then tweak the wording rather than start from scratch. If you want a copywriter for longer pieces I can introduce one, but it's almost never needed for a club site.
